Product Description
"Ms. Simone's vocal and piano style make her a culture unto herself." --New York Times

A gorgeous, inimitable singer and songwriter, Nina Simone (1933-2003) changed the face of both music and race relations in America. She struck a chord with bluesy jazz ballads like "Put a Little Sugar in My Bowl" and powerful protest songs such as "Mississippi Goddam" and "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black," the anthem of the American Civil Rights movement. Coinciding with the re-release of her famous Philips Recordings, here are the reflections of the "High Priestess of Soul" on her own life.

The mesmerizing autobiography of one of the most revered soul, jazz, and blues divas of our time-the late Nina Simone.

5 out of 5 stars A Strong and Proud Queen   June 4, 2010

I am sooo glad and sooo proud to have this book. I thought I loved her before reading. Now I am sure of it.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerized   May 4, 2010
S. Gregory (Arlington, VA)
I was initially drawn to this book because I've always been curious about a woman who could make the songs that Nina made -- particularly in the manner that she made them. Now, after reading and learning of the 'story behind the story' - I can only say that I'm mesmerized beyond recognition and more in love with Nina than ever! This is a powerful read of a woman that followed her spirit - good and bad. Her gift - her voice - her passion - will live forever - and it should!

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for Nina Simone   January 13, 2010

This review is primarily a response to "Lemas Mitchell's" review entitled "A case study in mental illness, stupidity and pure insanity," and to others who expected more from this book:
The point is not to ponder how Nina Simone could have, or should have lived her life, but to discover how she did live her life. It's her autobiography, so presumably she wrote about what was important to her. Why should she have to write about her music. Why should she have to appear "sane" or "sensible" or prove that she learned from her mistakes. Why should she have to please us or be who we want her to be to satisfy some illusion? Perhaps she felt her music spoke for itself. What do you[Lemas Mitchell] know about what it was like growing up as Nina Simone - a prodigiously talented black woman whose youth was spend in this country during a time when racism was rampant and woman's rights were trampled upon? Maybe she was a victim and had a right to complain about it. Even if she wasn't, who cares? She is automatically cut loads of slack for the enormous contribution she made to humanity. We accept her no matter what her faults or shortcomings because she had the guts to live an intense life and feel deeply and we all receive the benefit of her enormous talent and her suffering, through her music. Nobody here was directly affected by Nina Simone's behavior, so what right have we to complain about it? Nina Simone is a supreme artist whose music helps us get in touch with our human selves, with the deep sadness and joy that connects us all. And god knows we need that with people like Lemas Mitchell in this world. We should be eternally grateful to such people as Nina Simone and I don't think Nina Simone had to prove anything or give us any more - she already gave so much of herself through her music. And had she not suffered, her music might not have the depth and richness that is has. If anything, the rest of us should never forget that we get all the benefits of her suffering without the pain. I'm appalled at the lack of understanding and gratitude in this review. Nobody with a heart and soul could have come to these conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars Not as powerful as her music. Few things are.   June 15, 2009

I always wondered how she put so much passion and anger into her music. Now I know. She lived a very up and down life. She knew what she wanted and went after it no matter how much pain or joy is caused her. After reading this book , I can understand how she performed on stage like it was her last night on earth. She was surrounded by tough situations and a tough life. I applaud her for her fire and passion.

People are saying that it wasn't written well enough, keep in mind that she was a musician first and foremost. I was happy to read this book even though the onslaught of sad moments in her life kept coming right at you. I think she was way ahead of her time and I really respect her even more after having read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Educational, Fast Paced, and incredibly interesting.   January 18, 2009

I became a fan of Nina simone the day I watched the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, and it stuck. I've since bought her old cd's and just recently purchased and read her book, I put a spell on you, Her story is amazing, and written with a lot of her personality in it. I finished this book soo quickly, A must for anyone interested in Nina Simone outside of her music.
